All users of our department get an email account of the form: 'email@example.com' where 'username' is the assigned Unix username.
For convenience, an email alias of the form 'firstname.lastname@example.org' is also created. Both forms of email address can be used interchangeably.
To access your email from a Unix host, type mutt at the command line of one of your xterms.
To access your email from a PC we recommend users use thunderbird. It is by default installed on all the Department's PC desktops and can be installed on home computers and/or laptops.
Also look at thunderbird tips for some useful tips and add-ons.
Webmail for people on the new email system is available at https://roaming.dfci.harvard.edu.
Webmail is not available for people on the old email system.
Set up vacation messages
Type vacation2 enable or vacation2 disable to either enable or disable mail on the new email system. Make sure you update your .vacation.msg prior to running this.

Create a signature
Type your signature information in a file named .signature in your home
To undo this feature, delete the .signature file.
Type your signature information in a text or html file and remember the location and the name of the file. For most people, a text file will be fine. Open up Thunderbird, go to Tools, Account Settings, place a a check next to Attach this signature and click on Choose to find your signature file. Click ok to finish. It is better to create the file on your local disk (i.e. the PC where thunderbird runs) to avoid any performance penalties.
To undo this feature uncheck the box next to "Attach this signature".

How to Forward Partners Email to Your Jimmy Account (click here)
Partners email integration
Every employee of the Institute is assigned a Partners userid/password and an email account of the form email@example.com. To access your Partners account please go to https://www.partners.org/email and log in using your Partners userid and password. To make matters more complicated, DFCI telecommunications create an email alias of the form firstname.lastname@example.org that points to the Partners email account.
We do not recommend users to use both email accounts as it will be very difficult to manage. The Partners email account has a 20Mb quote (meaning that if your inbox exceeds it, incoming mail will bounce). The best solution is to forward your Partners email account to your jimmy account.
You cannot enable forwarding from the Partners Outlook Web Access.
Please follow the directions in the "How to Forward Partners Email to Your Jimmy Account" section.
