The research in the Michor Lab focuses on the evolutionary dynamics of cancer. Cancer emerges due to an evolutionary process in somatic tissue. The fundamental laws of evolution can best be formulated as exact mathematical equations. Therefore, the process of cancer initiation and progression is amenable to mathematical investigation. We are interested in important questions in cancer research and use the tools of tevolutionary and computational biology, applied mathematics, statistics and computer science to approach them. Current areas of interest include the treatment response to targeted therapies, the emergence of resistance to anti-cancer therapy, the dynamics of cancer initiation, progression, and metastasis, and (epi)genetic determinants of cancer genome evolution.
